Kate Crane grew up in Baltimore in a tight-knit family of German and Czech immigrants. She came of age in the D.C. punk scene and Riot Grrrl, then earned a bachelor’s degree at Towson State, where she studied Virginia Woolf, Black feminism, art history, and French.
She began her career as a journalist in New York, writing for Wall Street Journal publications and an alt weekly. She copy-chiefed across dozens of magazines and loved the close work of page proofs. For about a decade she covered music regularly for Time Out New York and Brooklyn Rail.
She has read all 72 Nero Wolfe novels. McNally Jackson on Prince Street and Housing Works on Crosby Street are sacred ground. New York is home, though she also spent a decade in Silicon Valley, where she saw coyotes, bobcats, and rattlesnakes. She is on the road now, unsure where she will land next.
What Ever Happened to Eddy Crane? A Memoir and a Murder Investigation (Hanover Square Press), is an investigative memoir about her father’s 1987 murder and the years she spent trying to understand it. www.KateCrane.com
