Writers’ Night Out is a chance to meet and mingle, to gather and connect, and to learn. These evenings will be in-person events, scattered throughout the year, and held in different locations. The goal is to bring Rochester Writers into the community with food, speakers, and networking.

The Inaugural Writers’ Night Out will be held at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm in Rochester Hills on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. and will feature three speakers. Samantha Lawrence, Museum Archivist, will share information about the museum’s newspaper archive and resources available to writers. Author Dirk Eichhorst will read from his novel, The Tempest in Glass, and discuss his decision to publish it as a Limited First Edition. And our featured presenter will be author and editor, Lisa Howard, who will speak about How to Be Your Own Best Editor. Gourmet tea sandwiches (Gluten Free and Vegan Options Available), fruit, soft drinks, and coffee will be served at the start of the evening. Dessert and museum tours to follow the speakers. Every attendee will receive a gift bag and there will be giveaways as well.

How to Be Your Own Best Editor: In today’s competitive editorial landscape, writers need to be as polished as possible. During this talk, writer and editor Lisa Howard will share tips about self-editing manuscripts, book proposals, query letters and magazine pitches. As someone who is regularly on both sides of the pages, she’ll also talk about what it’s like to collaborate with a freelance editor and how to maximize the experience, both in terms of skill-building and budgeting. Feel free to ask her lots of questions.
